Ayurvedic medicine helps you reach your optimal healthy balance

Are you tired of trying all kinds of health supplements that claim to provide rejuvenation and wellbeing, without really feeling much benefit, or trying this therapy and that therapist, spending hundreds, and sometimes even thousands of dollars without really seeing a change for it? What about diets? You eat healthy food and even try to go organic, but are disappointed to find you still feel sluggish, stressed or just as bloated as you started out. The answer to these and many other common health problems can be found in the ancient "Science of Life" from India, known as Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a holistic system of natural therapies which can help you detoxify, renew your energy and maintain a healthier lifestyle far into the future.

Ayurvedic medicine is different to most other forms of medicine because the diagnosis and treatment are based on, and tailored to, your individual ayurvedic constitution or body type, also known as your dosha. Your body is made up of a combination of the various elements of fire, water, earth and air, these elements exist in everyone in different degrees and consequently greatly affect our mental and physical composition. From our moods and emotional tendencies, to body shape, hair and skin color, complexion, bone structure, weight etc, it is all governed to a large extent by these forces within our bodies. Unfortunately in the west today, because we have little or no knowledge of our constitution—regardless of our best efforts, we often unwittingly put these forces out of balance, which results in an increased spiral of frustration and even feelings of hopelessness. By adopting an ayurvedic lifestyle suited to your dosha, you can find your correct balance, achieving your optimal heath and wellbeing.

According to Ayurvedic medicine, there are 3 primary life forces in the body or doshas : ayurvedic Pitta, ayurvedic Vata and ayurvedic Kapha. Each individual body consists of all three doshas to varying degrees, with the dominating one being the individual's primary dosha. When the dohas’ are out of balance than disease is the resultant effect. The Pitta dosha represents fire and its quality is hot, oily, sharp, light, unpleasant in odor, mobile and liquid. The Vata dosha represents air and is primarily dry, cold, light, quick, subtle and agitated. Kapha, representing water, is cold, moist, heavy, wet, dull, sticky, soft and firm.

Ayurvedic Pitta

A Pitta, (fire) predominating person will tend towards fiery emotions like irritability and anger, and have a strong drive to succeed in whatever they do. They will be logical, intelligent, good leaders and debaters, critical, opinionated, driven, dignified, convincing and sometimes prone to egotism. They are kind to their friends and followers but unrelenting to their enemies. They are daring and exciting, adventurous and sharp minded. These people often require retreat from their busy careers in order to rejuvenate and find balance. Their body types are moderate, medium build and height, with moderate good muscles, usually have fine soft thin hair that greys early or goes bald. Pita types tend towards seeking to accumulate power.

Ayurvedic Vata

A Vata (air) predominating person will have emotional tendencies towards fear and anxiety. They are very creative and imaginative, and make good artists, poets, inventors and writers. They can have good mental aptitude and are quick to grasp things, but are also quick to forget. They can be indecisive, changeable, excitable, moody and solitary people but can make friends easily with people outside their social sphere. They are neither good leaders nor good followers, and are not very materialistic. Their body type is tall or short, thin, bony, poorly developed body, protruding joints, dry, cold, thin skin, and coarse or wavy hair. Vata types can benefit from a health retreat that puts them in touch with their creativity while also grounding them to the earth through relaxation outdoors.

Ayurvedic Kapha

Kapha (water) type, will tend towards watery emotions like attachment, love, romance, family. They are loyal, kind and trustworthy but slow to change and slow to form decisions. They tend toward conservatism, are slow to spend money, are not goal driven, rather staying fixed in routine and habit. They can be closed minded outside of their sphere of familiarity; they are not very adventurous and prefer to stay at home. They are slow express emotions, particularly anger. They are steady and reliable and tend to have friends within their family community, culture and religion. They have large body types, short, stout, big and well developed, tend towards weight gain and obesity, have thick, cold skin, and abundant, thick, oily hair. Kapha energy is best suited in a spa environment in which the individual can be pampered, relaxed and rejuvenated, allowing them to function with renewed energy and wellbeing.

This simple but time tested method of aromatheraphy, diet and meditation suited to your own unique bodily constitution can make such a difference to your entire life. For example, a typical vata person is suffering from chronic anxiety, is unable to focus on their work and has restless sleep. They believe they are doing all they can to stay healthy and well, their diet is organic consisting of salads, wholegrains, and fruits but they end up in a heap unable to function. An educational and relaxing health retreat can help you avoid these pitfalls and learn how to relax and rejuvenate without buying a lot of fancy products or using the wrong techniques for your body type.
